I have never promoted anything and I do just fine. I think the whole idea of promoted listings is based on the cynical assumption that buyers are either too stupid or too lazy to scroll down a bit on a page of listings.

Yes. You are calculating correct. eBay gets about 30 of the money I bring in.

I promote almost all items at 5 percent. I keep a few not promoted to see if they will sell. I am a volume seller. Because I don’t find higher dollar items very often. I think I need to promote to get sells. Sometimes almost all of my solds are due to being promoted. I don’t think I get any sells due to my RUclips channel.

I do 3.3% across the board all listings. I get lots of sales from it and it's a smaller amount than recommended that doesn't hurt too much. I signed up for reseller genie under your link last month. It's great.

I didn't promote for a while, now I do all my listings at 2%. It is only twenty cents for a ten dollar item. It isn't breaking me for that little, but I think it is helping my sales.

See that's the thing. You shouldn't have to jump through hoops and give eBay more money when they do absolutely NOTHING..... We source the item, ship it and deal with all customer service..

I do NOT use promoted (fees) listings. We do well. Everybody's model is different - we are INDEPENDENT - and as such, our results can be different than others. We've had an account since 1998 and over the years have seen so much. While we didn't get intentional on listing and selling as a business until 2019 - we did both purchase and sell prior.

Do I promote? Usually Yes. Do you need to? No, it depends on what you're selling. The beauty of reselling is that you can customize everything to your needs. I experimented and found that I get more sales with promotion, more so than running a sale. So that's what I do, but other methods might work better for others. Oh, and I dream of genie :)

I promote at the minimum rate plus .1 - .5. Only rarely do o promote more than 3 percent. It just gets so expensive. There’s is no standard rate. It varies greatly. It seems like the recommended standard rate seems to vary from about 9% to like 15%. That’s crazy expensive! We already pay about 13%, so I hen you you add promoted rates on top of regulqr fees…wow. Especially when we have to pay fees on shipping too

I dream of Genie. I promote. I tried not to promote and sales went down. I have over 6,000 items listed. Some niched down categories that are more rare that I still promote at a lower rate.

What is the size of your shed? I have a shed that is 10x20 which I’m converting into similar what you have.

I am new and not promoting, I just don't know how to ship TUPPERWARE, can I use the post office padded flat rate envelope? I want buyer to pay as little as possible for shipping and for myself I want to pay as little as possible for packaging.

I do promote. I'd like to not feel like I need to BUT I've tested it out by not immediately promoting when making a new listing and it will go for quite some time without any views everytime I should probably give it longer to test.

My family has flipped cars forever and I sell the parts that they aren’t selling with the vehicle that were bought with the vehicle. I cannot sell 2020 GMC Acadia AT4 floor mats OEM without telling you exactly what they’re for. They simply will not fit another vehicle, we own them because when we bought the vehicle, they were in it, but we chose to use WeatherTech instead. I also list the GM part number. All required specifications for that listed item. I would think General Motors would be proud to have so many hits on a search for their brands. And this isn’t going to affect the sales of their 2025 SUVs. Some people here have it right. You buy the right things to sell. Do that you dont need to promote. But some of us parttime resellers find good deals know the stuff will sell but need to break that top 100 items items list. I also am out of South Dakota. I watch the picking channels and see people pick up things we'll never have or see at prices that will never be that low. So i have to promote

eBay forces small sellers to promote. It’s like extortion in a way. If I don’t promote my listings get buried. 3%. But I make 50:50 sales promoted vs not.

I'm going to have to agree you had money to spend that was yours. Whats left thats actually yours after may be close to breaking even. You must include gas, time sourcing, time listing and yes the big one federal tax. There is a shear large amount of volume to actually truly make out. 1 dollar to every 25 you might make out and lets be honest 1 hour sourcing unless at a good large auction definitely digs into profit.

Personally, I agree with you. To each their own. Do whatever works for you. I find that my items sit for a while. Even good highly desirable ones unless I promote. I promote at 6%. I also list 20 new items a day.

Bottom line- you do have to promote. But I’m not taking offers on everything. (If I have 30% off) Like your channel (most of the time)?

I promote and cross list and my sales have been garbage lately! I'm still fairly new on other platforms so I expect sales to be slow there, but ebay has been throttling my listings. It's no coincidence that there are days I only sell the same number of items and make within the dollar amount that I did the day before. I feel like ebay slows my sales down toward the end of the month to prevent me from making too much money. Month over month my sales will only grow 10-12%, but looking at my sales day to day there is obvious signs of it. Even my listing qty dont affect sales. I can list 18 items and make 4 sales and then do 40 listings and only get 4 sales the next day. The past couple months have been very frustrating with whatever is going on and insulting to someone that has been on the platform since 2006. I did a test this morning going all in with a sale. I let ebay pick the over rated price and percent, but I only let the sale go through the weekend. Sadly, my 90 day total currently is 6638.04.

I don't necessarily believe that promotions are necessary, but as a relatively new full timer (1 year this month) I think it helps me get traction with the algorithm😊 Thanks for the great content!❤

I don’t promote at all. Never have. My 90 day total is just over $26,000 with a $35 asp…. And that 90 day is less than usual. I don’t run sales. I just end and sell similar and reduce prices a little after 90 days. I also send offers to watchers regularly.

I’ve sold a few beanie babies that do very well. I can’t think of many of the top of my head except 2. There’s a dragon that’s marked from Wales and his matching bear(bear is only about $6-8 but sells great if you pair the 2 together). Both are a very bright red. And have the wales flag on them.

When you give sales numbers, could you tell us the total number of days that is included in the sales total?

I promoted pretty much all of my older listings but the newer ones I have listed I chose not too. And the new stuff is selling too so maybe promoting is not needed.

Hey CWP/F - Question: You buy and sell a lot of low-value stuff ($<10 to $20 items). How do you get all that junk (no offense) listed? I’ve heard you talk about a couple people who help you out from time to time, but it seems to me like you’ve got to have a lot of help. Please advise. Thanks.

I do promote at 2% only on a 3600 item store. I had 200 old listings of carded Hot Wheels, I had not listed any additional Hot Wheels this year and we all know what ever category you list in is where you get sales. So I put 100 of them on at 9% promotion which is like 18% since the shipping is almost equal to the cost of the item. I noticed that, listing I could send an offer to, it was all Hot Wheels that were 9% promoted. This week I took them off the 9% (had 8 sales) and put them all on 20% off sale and they started flying out the door which is amazing since they have been listed for 18-30 months. I like the sale aspect because it earns me repeat customers, due to getting a good deal. I dream of genie.

Resellers who can't ship every single business day without a hiccup aren't up to snuff for the algorithms😅

Listing is what makes your items sell not promotions I don’t list everyday but when I list items I get sells it seems like if you’re listing your putting work in you get sells

I don't have a huge store and I sell weird stuff so my sales have never been crazy good. That said, I've increased the number of items I'm listing over the past 1-1/2 months and my sales this quarter are up by 69% over last quarter. I have never promoted a single item. I'd rather run a sale and give a discount to my buyers than give eBay more money but that's just my opinion 😉

I use to promote here and there and removed all promotions. Ebay takes enough money from me wasn't giving them more. Their suggested percentages are nuts (I only did less than 4 percent) I did not notice an increase of sales on promoted items. I am a serious seller and do quite well without promoting. Waste of money

I promote all my items at 2%. I don't think I have to, but I do think it increases sales. My business model needs fast sales, so I try to check all the boxes. Good listing pictures, good titles, and a small promotion. All with 50% or higher sale through rates. I so understand that everyone's business model is a little different, but for now, this one is working for me.

You promote eBay on RUclips so eBay promotes your stuff for free. It is pretty obvious.

My past two years is proof that promoted isn't needed. Two years ago, I promoted everything. Last year, I reduced my promoted listings down to 50% of listings and my sales were 25% higher. This year, it is less than 25% promoted and most of that is old stuff leftover from last year and I'm up another 15% in sales compared to the year before and it's only been half the year, we have yet to get through 4th quarter. Last year, I made the decision to focus more on ASP and sell through rate instead of relying on promoting and have been the better for it. I spend less time sourcing, sell less items but am making more $$ with far less promoted sales (only 10% of total sales come from promotion). And I don't do social media.

I think Promoted Listing necessity depends on your niche. Some categories like general clothing, or other over-saturated, lower dollar categories probably do need promoted listings to get visibility. I have tried Promoted Listings on less than 1% of my listings over the years, and generally it has been useless. But I deal in categories that have generally low saturation rates. And yes, I make a full time living. I generally believe that Promoted Listings is mostly a scam. They could give everyone equal exposure by rotating listings, but they choose to squeeze sellers into thinking they need Promoted Listings to succeed. But to each their own. I already pay for a store and the final value fees, and sometimes listing fees, and they think I should pay more as well? All that for crappy customer service? Pfft....

I promote thoughtfully. For instance, I don't promote new listings; they're already getting bumped. Or, if I'm selling something that has a lot of competition, I'll promote 2-3% for the bump. I haven't looked closely at the stats as I've only been selling a lot on ebay for a couple months. So that may change.
